Q & A: Diarrhoea in a 3week old baby

Your question answered.

Your Question:
My baby is 3 weeks old and is passing loose looking stools very frequently. Should I be concerned?

Answer:
The stool consistency and frequency can be very different in different babies. It can also be very different in the same baby at different ages. In breastfed babies it can be loose or watery in consistency and may be as frequent as one every feed.
In that context, your baby may be having a normal stool pattern for his/her age. However, it is important to see if there are other things associated with changing stool habits like; irritability, fever, poor feeding, abdominal bloating, presence of mucus or blood in the stool and rash in the peri-anal area. These are some, not all, the signs and symptoms that would suggest the need for more detailed evaluation. If there are any of these signs and symptoms or any other that you are concerned about, I would strongly suggest that you have the baby seen by your doctor.
