Growth Charts for children

I am writing this post on the request of some friends and colleagues who wished to get links to the CDC (USA) growth charts. One might have to get used to using these charts and interpreting the information obtained from plotting a child's growth measurements on them.

In Maldives, unfortunately, growth monitoring is very poor. Weight is the only parameter that is regularly recorded on the Vaccine and Growth record card. Monitoring weight, length and head circumference are all very useful for proper assessment of a child's over all physical growth.

Here are the links to printable PDF versions of the charts:

Girls: Birth to 36 months of age
Boys: Birth to 36 months of age
Girls: 2 years to 20 years
Boys: 2 years to 20 years

The charts are to be used to plot growth parameters. Use the x-axis to mark the age of the child and the y-axis to mark the parameter (for example the weight).

For instance to plot the weight on the chart of a 1 month old boy with a weight of 4.5kg do the following:
      1. open the file "weight for age: boys birth to 36months"
      2. on the chart mark on the x-axis the 1 month mark
      3. on the chart mark on the y-axis the 4.5kg mark
      4. plot a mark on the chart where the 1month and 4.5kg axis marks meet.

      To read:
      1. check to see which line the mark (from 4 above) falls on the chart.
      2. the centile value is presented as lines (graphs), read the centile mark corresponding to the mark.

50th centile means: 50% of normal kids of that age have that weight! 25th centile: 25%...etc
