Yes, Aedes preferentially breed in "clean, still fresh water". The reason why the Vector Control Unit of DPH (which has now become CCHDC) used to recommend covering the house well was that it was a common breeding ground for mosquitoes.
With the well water becoming highly saline this maybe less of a problem. However, unless very saline, it could still be a breeding ground! This is especially the case with rainy seasons when the wells alos act as the "drainage" of the rain water caught by the house hold roofs.

Comment on Outbreak Alert: Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

It would certainly be a good idea to have one. This would be a very special age group with unique physiological processes happening. I would recommend an annual medical check up. It must be discussed with the young adult in question and planned properly.

Comment on Constipation in children

It is quite uncommon for an exclusively breastfed baby to have constipation. However, we do come across cases every now and then. This is an age group in which the child would need to be assessed for non-dietary causes of constipation and may therefore require special examination and perhaps special investigations.
I would suggest that you get the child seen by a pediatrician to assess the condition and plan actions as is seen necessary.

Comment on Another Health Insurance Scheme to be launched soon!

I hope that the Maldivian government will listen to practitioners like you. Both doctors and patients need to be informed of the kind of care that is covered. It is a shame that important and necessary procedures and medicines are not, however, since people of modest means might need them. Thanks for this information, it is very useful.

Comment on Outbreak Alert: Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

I would like to ask a questions not related to this post...Just wondering if teenagers should do an annual medical checkup like adults?

Comment on We are in to Dengue Season 2009 and the signs of things to come are not good.

a group of women came to my house and ordered my very salty water well to be covered as it might breed mosquitoes. my rain water tank is covered. but the drain outside on the road is waterlogged. i thought denque mosquitoes breeded in fresh water and not salt water. dont these people from public health know?

Comment on Constipation in children

I would like to know how to prevent constipation in babies I have read the information as well, but this child is 5 months old and on exclusive breast feeding. can you please give a suggestion.

Comment on Another Health Insurance Scheme to be launched soon!

Wearing a medical id wristband, especially when away on holiday, is a great way of having vital medical data to hand for paramedics and carers should you have an accident.

Comment on Dengue: Follow-up

The article has been published on Minivan News website.
Thanks for the heads up on the Dengue epidemic.
Didn't know that these three months see a rise in the number of cases.
